Why should we live? What is the purpose behind family, relationships, education, work, service, sports, entertainment, religion and faith? What is the point of it all? These questions have been asked by a countless number of people. Why are we here? Our lives are so programed with occupations, activities, and goals. The question is why? On May 13, 1997 I was born in the city of Normal, Illinois. I consider myself a fortunate individual to have been born into the family and situation God gave me. I am an American and reside in the greatest nation on the face of the earth. Not many young people are blessed with the opportunity to ponder the meaning of life and the influences that have guided them through their journeys. I could have been raised as a rice famer in Southern China, or maybe as a soldier in the civil war of South Sudan. Had this been the case, I would be a drastically different person than I am today. The lives we lead shape the people we become. My life has been molded by a variety of influences. Family is the first influence that I experienced and, obviously, they have massively impacted the person I am. I have grown up with two brothers and, most recently, a little sister. My brothers, Andrew and Grant, are, respectively, two years older and two years younger than I am. Being the middle of three boys is a force that has shaped me in so many ways. I believe that the raising of the drinking age to 21 years old has created more problems than solving them. America has had past experiences with a similar situation when they enforced prohibition. As we know, prohibition was a nationwide constitutional ban on the production, importation, transportation, and sale of alcoholic beverages, which was a huge failure. America have tried prohibition legislation twice in the past for controlling irresponsible drinking problems. The first National Prohibition was during the 1920’s, and the state prohibition was in the 1850’s. Americans, then should not waste their money on taxes for building moreweapons! There are other issues America must be concerned with. Why notstop the building of weapons and use the money for other needed causes?Today, over forty percent of Americas national budget is used for ouralready large nuclear arsenal, but less than one percent is allocated forthe homeless and other vital causes. For example, the money could be usedfor helping the homeless, working towards a drug-free America, and easingthe trade deficit. The money could be put to use to ease housing costs, making housesaffordable for homeless people. More houses could be built and old onesrenovated or replaced. Old boarded-up buildings could be torn down and newapartments would take its place. Empty lots can be transformed in toaffordable and clean rooms. Thus, more houses lowers the costs to buy onewhich, in turn, allows more people to move in off the streets. If homecannot be built, existing shelters could use food and medical aid. We owe countries billions of dollars which we can never pay off atthe rate we are going. The American dollar is falling below othercountries currency. Our country needs extra money to pay debts and torenew trust with other countries. Once trust is renewed, we can againemerge as a leading super power. Hence, weapons now are gathering dust in bunkers waiting for a warthat will never come. Money must be put to use for the homeless, to endthe drug problem, and to lessen trade deficit. We, as a country, shouldworry about our problems besides the war. Lets make America that clean,drug-free place that has kept Americans dreaming for many years.
